Should You See a Dermatologist for Sun Spots?

It's a well-known fact that the sun can cause many types of damage to the skin, including sunburns and wrinkles. But perhaps the most common cosmetic damage that occurs are sunspots. Sunspots are flat brown spots that usually show up on the face, neck, chest or hands. Typically, sunspots are harmless and don't pose much of a health risk. One of the main reasons people remove sunspots is purely for cosmetic purposes.

With that said, do be mindful of the differences between a sunspot and signs of skin cancer caused by the sun. Melanoma is the most high profile case of skin cancer and early signs of melanoma are a new mole or changing the characteristics of an existing mole. These include a change in size, itching or bleeding. If you experience any spot on the skin that is rapidly changing size or shape should be seen by a dermatologist.

If you have sunspots and just can't bare to live with them any longer, dermatologists can prescribe retinols or other creams that will reduce the sunspots. Additionally, there are other procedures, such as the IPL Laser Treatment, offered at Fairlawn Aesthetic M.D. that can also eliminate sunspots. Through the use of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) we are able to release multiple light-waves down to the second layer of skin where the imperfections are destroyed while being minimally invasive.

Post procedure is very minimal with minor side effects. Regular activity can still continue while the only issues are that of a sunburn. The treated part of the skin will be sensitive for a few days after the procedure.

Sunspots can be a cosmetic eyesore for some. Don't hesitate to get them removed if you feel so inclined. Contact our offices in Ohio to schedule an appointment with Dr. McDaniel today!

After the deep-freeze damage to the fat cells, they will eventually die and be eliminated by the body — a process which takes time, about 1-3 months or more, resulting in up to 20%-25% reduction of fat in a treated are...

How Often Should I Get a Chemical Peel?

Can you get chemical peels too often? Chemical peels are helpful for a variety of skin conditions. They are often used as acne treatment and can target age spots, improving blemishes, fine lines, and wrinkles. Because of their healing properties, it may be tempting to use chemical peels excessively. However. doing so too much can backfire and create more skin issues, such as: -redness -discoloration -hyperpigmentation -irreversible spots -bacterial infections Ironically, if you use chemical peels too often, you may risk bringing on the issue you want to treat. So, how often is too often? The answer depends on the strength of the chemical peel. For instance, are you using at-home products or medical-grade peels from an esthetician? Chances are if you're using a peel you bought from the store, the chemicals are not as strong as professional peels. Although this is generally a con, you can typically use these superficial-level products more often without adverse reacti...
