How Often Should I Get a Chemical Peel?

Can you get chemical peels too often?

Chemical peels are helpful for a variety of skin conditions. They are often used as acne treatment and can target age spots, improving blemishes, fine lines, and wrinkles. Because of their healing properties, it may be tempting to use chemical peels excessively. However. doing so too much can backfire and create more skin issues, such as:

-redness

-discoloration

-hyperpigmentation

-irreversible spots

-bacterial infections

Ironically, if you use chemical peels too often, you may risk bringing on the issue you want to treat. So, how often is too often?

The answer depends on the strength of the chemical peel. For instance, are you using at-home products or medical-grade peels from an esthetician? Chances are if you're using a peel you bought from the store, the chemicals are not as strong as professional peels. Although this is generally a con, you can typically use these superficial-level products more often without adverse reactions; once a month is usually safe.

However, if you want a peel to get the job done, visit your local dermatologist, and you'll have more options. Medium peels can remove scarring and even precancerous growths, so it is advised to use these less often than your typical storefront options. Generally, these should be used once every four to six months.

Last but certainly not least, we have deep chemical peels, which should only be used to remove deep scarring and wrinkles. Because these peels dig deeper than your epidermis, they can be irritating and painful. This means these should be used very sparingly, as it will take your skin some time to heal from each deep peel. In most cases, you should only receive a deep peel every 2-3 years.

We hope this article serves as a helpful chemical skin peel guide. If you would like to book a consultation near Fairlawn, Ohio, our team of experienced estheticians at Fairlawn Aesthetic MD would be happy to serve you. Visit our website to book now!

Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a skin treatment that uses a specialized blade — similar to a surgical scalpel called a dermatome — to remove dead skin and hairs. People may also refer to it as microplaning or blading. When you have it done by a certified professional aesthetician, experts generally consider it safe. However, a person should not try to do dermaplaning on themselves or others at home. The basic concept of dermaplaning is the same as shaving, but in place of a razor, it uses a scalpel-type blade to remove skin cells, hair, and other debris that may be present on the surface of the skin. The continuous exposure of the top layer of skin to UV rays, environmental toxins, and irritants means that it may begin to appear dull. Dermaplaning removes the top layer of skin to reveal newer skin cells that may make a person’s skin appear smoother and glowing. An esthetician, plastic surgeon, or dermatologist can perform skin resurfacing procedures such as dermaplaning. A person should choose a...
